So Much For The Fens... ACC Looking Elsewhere

The Atlantic Coast Conference was supposed to hold the 2009 Baseball Championships at Fenway Park in Boston ((pictured, thanks getty images))... that would have been cool.

But now, not so much...

From the ACC directly... ahem... quote...

"Fenway Sports Group announced today that due to an in-house scheduling error, it will be unable to host the 2009 ACC Baseball Championship.

"We sincerely apologize for the error that resulted in Fenway Park being unavailable to host the 2009 ACC Baseball Championship," said Mike Dee, President of Fenway Sports Group. "The Atlantic Coast Conference and its baseball championship are very important to us and we are truly sorry for this situation."

In the immediate future, the ACC will look to secure a new venue to host the 2009 championship. Further information on the 2009 event will be released directly by the conference office as soon as it's available.

"It's disappointing that this scheduling error has resulted in the upcoming championship not being played at Fenway Park, but we look forward to being at Fenway in 2010," said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. "In terms of this year's event, we are moving swiftly to find a quality venue to host one of our premier conference championships."

Although the originally-scheduled 2009 championship is not able to be played in Fenway, the ACC and FSG have agreed to terms to bring the 2010 ACC Baseball Championship to Boston and Fenway Park.

"We look forward to bringing ACC baseball to Fenway and will do everything possible to make 2010 a great success," said Dee.

What do you want to bet:

A) Davis Whitfield, the ACC's Grand-Exalted-Poobah-of-Championships will not be getting any rest any time in the near future...

B) Re-read the Swofford quote... heads will roll over this...
"Heads will roll, I tell you..."

C) What do you wanna guess that the Olympic Center in Cary, North Carolina becomes the emergency-default location for 2009...?

This had been decided after the 2006 championships, for those of you who had lost touch on these proceedings... and it took the Fenway Group until NOW ((???!!!)) to realize there was a scheduling conflict...???

Nine months beforehand...???

Makes perfect sense...
What...??? Did Jack Roush schedule a party or something...???

In a move that, once again, surprises no one the Southeastern Conference and the CBS Television network have signed a 15-year deal extending their relationship until the year 2023.

Ahem...quote... courtesy of the SEC themselves...

"CBS Sports has reached a historic 15-year contract extension with the Southeastern Conference to broadcast its football and basketball games, it was announced today by Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports and Mike Slive, Commissioner of the SEC.

"In the new agreement, beginning with the 2009-10 season, CBS Sports continues to be the exclusive national network broadcaster of SEC home football games, including the SEC Championship Game. CBS Sports will showcase the top conference matchups each week of the package with the “SEC Game of the Week”. The agreement also includes a prime time game and doubleheader opportunities. In addition, CBS Sports continues its coverage of SEC regular-season basketball.

“This landmark deal allows THE SEC ON CBS to continue to be a cornerstone of our fall programming for many years to come,” said McManus. “The agreement provides CBS Sports with the opportunity to showcase the excitement, pageantry and rich traditions of the SEC across all CBS platforms. We are thrilled to continue our long-standing relationship with one of the premiere conferences in the nation. ”

"The Southeastern Conference is proud to continue its association with CBS Sports,” said Dr. Lee Todd, President of the University of Kentucky and the Southeastern Conference. “This national network agreement provides a unique platform to share both the athletic and academic achievements of the 12 member institutions."

“The SEC is the gold standard in college athletics, and we are proud to be associated with this great conference and its outstanding administrators, coaches and student-athletes,” said Mike Aresco, Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Sports. “The length of this deal is a testament to the great brand that THE SEC ON CBS has become.”

"The Southeastern Conference is extremely pleased to extend its long-standing relationship with CBS Sports,” added Slive. "THE SEC ON CBS enables the conference to continue its unique full, national network exposure. We have enjoyed working with CBS Sports over the past 13 years and we are excited about our long-term future."

In addition to the broadcast rights on CBS Sports, this comprehensive long-team deal includes certain digital, internet, wireless, Video-on-Demand, data and enhanced highlight rights across all CBS platforms, including CBS College Sports Network and CBSSports.com. Also, simulcasts of CBS Sports games will be available for distribution by the CBS College Sports Network.

Everyone used to call the CBS network the "Tiffany Network." Does this mean the SEC is now the "Tiffany Conference?"

More on the story as it develops...

An announcement is expected Friday at Michigan International Speedway where Newman will be introduced as the driver of the #4 Chevrolet. Details and car sponsorship are still being worked out.

Newman will leave Penske racing at the end of the year. Back in February Ryan Newman edged Tony Stewart to win the Daytona 500.

While sponsorship offers for Newman's #4 Chevrolet are still being worked out, Stewart will have the number of his childhood hero on his car, #14, with Office Depot and Old Spice as the sponsors
